The mission of Race for Change is to work together to strive for justice. We want to create sustainable change in as many communities as possible, slowly but decisively dismantling systems of oppression and uplifting the Black community. Change happens one person, one team, one community at a time.
Created by the UC San Diego basketball programs as a way to address racial equality across the country, Race for Change began in October 2020. Each program that joins chooses its own initiative centered around racial equality to fundraise for and raise awareness for during a 5K walk or run. 2022 marks the third year that the Cal Women’s Basketball program will be leading a Race for Change. This year Race For Change will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21.
Cal Women’s Basketball is raising money to provide resources for Cal Athletics Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice Office. The office, led by Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas is responsible for the development, implementing, and administering diversity, equal employment opportunity, and affirmative action efforts in order to comply with government legislation and management directives and support equity and inclusion programs.
Since 2020, nearly $20,000 has been raised for the DEIBJ Office through Race For Change, directly benefiting Cal Athletics student-athletes and staff. The goal for 2023 is to raise $5,000.
