About Democracy Camp
Democracy Camp is a four-day bootcamp that give students first-hand exposure to different facets of public service: legislative paths, community organizations, local and state government, legal professions, research, and philanthropy. Fellows learn directly from guest speakers about the opportunities available in these fields, and even travel to Sacramento for a day to experience work and life in the state capital.
Fellows also participate in skill-building modules that focus on practical and tangible takeaways, including networking and resume writing. During Democracy Camp, Fellows have the opportunity to put these skills to practice by networking with speakers and exploring public-service internship opportunities on campus and beyond. Many Fellows go on to pursue summer internships while studying at UC Berkeley, and many of our alumni now have successful careers in public service.
Our Fellows are passionate about making a positive difference in the world and are seeking the tools and resources to chart their own path to a meaningful public-service career. We strive to make our programs accessible and equitable, including for first-generation, non-traditional, and transfer students. Democracy Camp Fellows complete the program feeling engaged and empowered to make an impact in their communities and beyond. We believe that building pathways for young people with varied perspectives and life experiences will enhance our democracy and ensure a more effective and representative government.
How You Can Help
Democracy Camp is made possible by generous gifts from donors. With your help, we hope to raise $5,000 of our $7,500 budget to fund the 2023 Democracy Camp in Berkeley program. The Institute of Governmental Studies has committed to funding the balance.
Donations will go towards the cost of learning materials and transportation to Sacramento, as well as three meals a day for all Fellows for the duration of the program. This will help defray costs for students who may otherwise be concerned about food insecurity during Spring Break.
We are accepting donations between now and October 31. No gift is too small, and your support will ensure that we are able to provide the best educational experience possible for UC Berkeley’s motivated change-makers!
Receive a 'Thank You' from a Democracy Camp Alum!
Allow us to show our appreciation! For donations of $25 or more we will post a shoutout on social media, and for donations of $100 or more we will share a 'thank you' message from a Democracy Camp Fellow. Additional perks are available for larger donations.
Democracy Camp is sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) and the Robert T. Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service at the University of California, Berkeley.
