100 Strong

100 Strong was founded in 2013 by 5 UC Berkeley undergraduate female students, who won the Big Ideas at Berkeley competition in the category of Global Poverty Alleviation with the idea of creating a leadership development program for 100 young women. We taught our very first DeCal (student-run class) for our mentors in Fall 2013 and began the mentorship program in Spring 2014.

Since then, our organization has partnered with REALM Charter Middle School in Berkeley, CA where we pair middle school girls with mentors who are currently students at UC Berkeley, meeting weekly over one year. We work with our mentors to create leadership development workshops covering topics such as teamwork, project management, public speaking and social issues at REALM. The mentoring program culminates with mentees creating their own leadership projects that will positively impact their school or greater community. This year, we are looking to partner with a new school, Montera Middle School in Oakland, to help our organization reach more young girls with our mentoring program. Can you make a gift to help us expand our program?

Through our fundraising goal, we hope to get funds to increase our efforts in supporting 100 middle school and high school girls in our leadership program, which has been our ultimate goal since Big Ideas. Currently, we have 40-50 girls each year in the program and we would like to reach more young girls in need of our leadership program. This funding goal will help us pay for more mentee community projects and organize leadership workshops. The funds will also be used towards covering transportation costs that will enable 30 UC Berkeley students to travel to the location of our new school partner.

We all excelled with the help of amazing mentors, teachers and leadership opportunities. We believe our program is relevant to everyone regardless of background because it provides young women with mentorship and an opportunity to practice being a leader, which will prepare them to take on leadership roles in the future. With more women in leadership positions, we strongly believe society as a whole will benefit.
