This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Transfer Student Center at UC Berkeley! Established in 1999, the Transfer Student Center was the first of its kind in the UC system, paving the way for greater transfer student support and recognition across all University of California campuses.
The initial vision was to create a space on campus that could provide support to the growing transfer student population on campus. With modest resources and one part-time staff position the center launched. For nearly two decades since then, we have been developing and growing our model of support to include services that focus on assisting transfer students with transitioning, navigating the university, engaging in discovery, and developing a sense of belonging. The center has served thousands of transfer students over the years and we hope to continue to build on a legacy of commitment, service, and Transfer Love.
As transfer enrollment has grown, so has the need for expanded services. This year, over 2500 transfers were admitted to UC Berkeley, making transfer students about 22% of the student population at Cal. By the time transfers arrive on campus they are poised for success but transitioning to a 4-year, public research university has its challenges. Some of those challenges include navigating a new campus culture, adjusting to the demands of upper division coursework, building on leadership and career development, and a short time to graduation.

The Transfer Student Center has served as the heart of the transfer community for nearly 20 years. Each year, the center works alongside 5900+ transfer students who, despite having their own unique responsibilities and challenges, transform their lives and the institution through academic achievement and their lived experience. At the Transfer Student Center, we strive to assist transfers as they begin their journey at Cal, move through the university, and get ready to graduate by offering the following services:
Having a Transfer Student Center on Berkeley’s campus sends an important message to transfer students and the broader campus community. That message is, transfer students matter here. By creating a welcoming environment, encouraging community, and developing vital resources and programming, we work to foster a sense of belonging and connection among transfers that is vital to academic and personal success.
More recently, there is an increasing number of transfer students going to four-year universities nationwide. The University of California is expected to see an increase in the number of transfer students at it’s nine undergraduate campuses. As such, it has adopted an exciting new policy, which mandates a 2:1 ratio of freshman to transfer students. With this kind of growth comes a need for increased and expanded resources.
While we have done much as a center, over the years, with only 3 full-time staff positions for a population of over 6900 transfers, it becomes increasingly challenging to do as much for transfers as we would like. We want to achieve even more - but we need YOUR HELP!
With your contribution, you will be supporting the Transfer Student Center’s mission of creating an inclusive and supportive community for all UC Berkeley transfer students, for many years to come.
All funds raised through our Crowdfunding campaign will be utilized in implementing programming and events for UC Berkeley’s transfer community.
1. Updated Facilities
The Transfer Student Center strives to be a welcoming environment for the thousands of transfers here on campus. Funding will be used to upgrade our Center with new furniture, free printing services, laptop and phone chargers, and more.
2. Transfer Events/Programming
Throughout the academic year, the Transfer Student Center coordinates extracurricular activities for transfer enrichment. Funds will be allocated toward future events such as meet and greet socials, workshops, and movie nights which will offer transfer students more opportunities to connect with fellow members of their community.
3. Study Jams
During exam season, the Transfer Student Center hosts Study Jams for students to have an inviting space for studying and relaxation. Funding will be used to provide students with the items necessary for academic success, including but not limited to: bluebooks, scantrons, healthy snacks, wellness supplies, etc.
