INvent

INvent Berkeley envisions a future where all students enjoy STEM quality education and can use this knowledge to solve the real-life problems in their communities.

Hi! My name is Eduardo Huerta-Mercado and I am an international student at UC Berkeley. Last year I founded INvent, a student organization whose mission is to promote science and technology in schools in developing countries. Next summer, a team of INvent volunteers will travel to Peru and Colombia to engage and empower students by teaching STEM concepts that will enable them to develop social innovation projects to address the issues that burden their societies.

PROJECT: Computer Science program for students with disabilities

A group of UC Berkeley students will travel to "Alegría del Señor", a Peruvian school for children with disabilities. The students in this school are usually from low-income backgrounds and therefore don´t receive a tertiary education after graduation. Most families prefer to invest in the education of their other children because they are more likeley to get a good job, given the harsh discrimination people with disabilities face in Peru. INvent Berkeley members together with local instructors will adress the issue by implementing a CS program at the school so the students can later work as programers and become active members of society.

PROJECT: STEM program to develop hands-on-projects

Another group will travel to Peruvian and Colombian high schools to teach the students technological competencies, like electronics with Arduino microcontrollers and 3D design and printing. Once high schoolers learn the basic concepts, INvent instructors will motivate them to use these tools to solve real problems in their communities. For instance, in 2017 a group of female students developed a flooding-detector in response to the devastating floodings that affected Peru.

PROJECT: Female inclusion in STEM field

A group of INvent members will implement UTK SIECs Social Innovation & Entrepreneurship Centers to empower female students to pursue STEM careers. Through SIECs, female students will complement their technical and soft skills by designing projects, doing research, and conducting experiments. The world needs the female perspective of engineers, scientists, and great thinkers.
