Our Crowdfunding Groups
To a swimmer, there is nothing more reminiscent than waking up in the early morning for a swim meet. We miss the team cheers, cramped warm up pools, and the joy of racing a personal best time. The Swim Club at Berkeley was established this semester to bring the fun community of competitive swimming we all love to Berkeley!
Swim Club at Berkeley is currently in its first official semester as a club, but has been in the works since Fall 2017. Other than the NCAA team on campus, UC Berkeley has no other competitive swim team for students, so our founders wanted to establish an inclusive community for swimmers of all skill levels to enjoy the sport and compete with other college clubs. With a current roster of nearly 80 swimmers, we have the ability to be the team-to-beat at both regional and statewide swim meets! However, due to a lack of funding, we are at risk of being unable to fund competition costs. As a new club on campus, we need funding to be able to attend swim meets and compete with other university teams.
By supporting the Swim Club, you are giving passionate student-athletes an opportunity to shine in both local and national competitions!
Our swimmers range from all levels of experience, from those who began swimming in high school to members of National swim teams. Although a majority of our swimmers are underclassmen, we have an almost even divide of classes from 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, so the legacy of our team will remain even after our current officers graduate. While our members vary in speed, we all share our immense love and passion for the sport.
Meets are central to the livelihood of a swimmer, and we want to be able to provide this positive and competitive setting for our new team, not just as bonding experiences, but also to gauge our progress and skill. However providing the experience of competition for our swimmers is not cheap.
Universities in our area, like Stanford, San Jose State, Santa Clara University and most U.C.’s have swim clubs that regularly hold dual meets and invitationals. The funding needed to register for and travel to these campuses rises with each participating swimmer. Meet registration, as well as travel and lodging, all come out-of-pocket from those who want to compete. Although we try to subsidize costs as much as possible using the money we gain from club dues, meet fees still sometimes remain too high for our swimmers to compete. We want our swimmers to have the full experience of competing with other schools, and we hope that our crowdfunding campaign can help us cross this hurdle!
Overall, we’re just a bunch of students who love to swim. As students at one of the most high-achieving universities in the world, we’ve all experienced our share of academic stress and doubts. However, the ability to escape these pressures at practice with our friends is a privilege we have; the second we dive into the water, all our worries are washed away. The support from all our donors gives us the equipment we need to provide a fun, collaborative space for our swimmers, and give UC Berkeley one more thing to brag about.
