IREC Competition and Research Rocketry

Space Technologies and Rocketry was founded in Spring 2016 with the goal of building and launching rockets that would someday travel in the void of space. Our aim as a club has been to create and nurture a diverse community of students interested in aerospace at Berkeley.

The past 3 years, our group of engineers, physicists, and scientists participated in the NASA Student Launch and Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) to hone our rocket-building skills. We developed our primary rockets, Spectre and Arktos, with the aim of honing our teams organizational and design skills with practical experience.

This upcoming year, we will be focused on building a new, modular competition rocket. The rocket will also be supplemented by a smaller sub-scale rocket that will test our primary subsystems. The primary goal of this rocket is to compete in IREC. We also aim to use this rocket as a key R&D platform for our more avant-garde projects, such as testing our liquid propellant engine. Ultimately, we hope that this project will strengthen both individual engineering skills and team-wide organizational methodologies. Our participation in IREC next summer will be more than enough reward, as its what was picked up along the way that is of true value. By setting our sights on these goals, we hope to further build STAR up as a pillar of engineering in the Berkeley community.

We are also continuing to engage in community outreach events that have been a cornerstone of our organization since its inception, where we aim to inspire the next generation of rocket scientists and astronomers. These involve both engaging with the campus community through workshops, and with the broader Bay Area community through hands-on activities with children from kindergarten through high school.

Our efforts this year intend to continue nourishing the flames of innovation at UC Berkeley. We are proud to be the premier aerospace club on campus, and excited to begin preparations for our first launches of the year. Your contribution is a tangible way of continuing the traditions this club has built up in the past 3 years.

Please make a gift today, and share this to your friends and family! Your support is greatly appreciated.

Best,
