Ten years ago a few dozen students came together to take back their food system from corporate interests; they ended up creating the nation's most radical grocery store. We are the Berkeley Student Food Collective: a student group working to provide more accessible, more sustainable, and healthier food to the Berkeley community — while learning how to run a democratic business in the process. We've run our nonprofit, volunteer-run collective across from Lower Sproul entirely by student volunteers for ten years; we want your help making our next decade even better.
We're requesting your support for our Decade 2 fundraising campaign to grow our student-developed work fighting food insecurity, supporting local farmers and vendors, and creating more experiential education opportunities.
But your support goes beyond our individual programs and operation. It goes toward keeping an ever-larger part of the food system out of corporate hands and in the democratic commons. It goes toward ensuring that the community served by our grocery store remains in control of it. It helps us secure a food system for people — not profit.
This campaign is dedicated to growing capacity for our core programs. Your contribution will go directly toward: increasing the availability of local produce from farmers otherwise marginalized from the food system and organic growers at up to 50% off for EBT users; funding visionary student-designed programming educating peers about systemic issues in the food system; funding dignified food jobs for students; developing and funding new strategic initiatives; and core operating costs of running our nonprofit organization & storefront.
We can't wait to build the next ten years with you.
