Cal Equestrian was born to directly challenge the notion that horseback riding is for the wealthy and privileged. Competitions are structured such that all riders, whether they have competed in Grands Prix or never ridden a horse before, will have a chance to compete and win points as an individual and for the team.
At IHSA competitions, team members compete on the hosting school’s horses, meaning you don’t need to own a horse to compete, significantly reducing the cost of riding. That being said, the team works with Hilary Johnson and her horses in order to practice and host our own competition (a requirement to be in the region). In an effort to keep dues as low as possible, they barely cover the cost of the lessons and membership dues, let alone horse care, riding apparel, travel, and more.
Thanks to the personal sacrifices of our team members and our coach, we have remained afloat and have become increasingly competitive. In 2019, two of our riders won at the regional competition to qualify for zone finals (which include all qualified riders from Washington State, Oregon, California, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, and British Columbia). Come 2020, three of our riders qualified for zone finals.
As our riders progressively improve, we hope to ensure that everyone can afford to practice and compete, but we cannot do it alone. Through your generous donations, you will support a radical change in equestrian competition, leveling the playing field and allowing riders of all backgrounds and experience levels to have their shot at the blue ribbon.
