The UC Berkeley Foodscape Map is Now Live!

May 02, 2017

We are thrilled to announce that the UC Berkeley Foodscape Map is online and publicly available. This democratically-produced, dynamic map aims to both reveal barriers to the full participation of historically marginalized community members in food-related learning and practice, and highlight opportunities and successes in overcoming such obstacles. The website includes a multi-layered map of the campus, as well as multiple infographics, audio interviews, and historical timelines. Please visit the map gallery and listen to our collection of narratives.

Thank you to the more than 95 contributors who have informed and participated in this collaborative project so far and to our many project donors for your support to make this map possible! We will be continuing to map additional data in the coming year and look forward to presenting recommendations to UC Berkeley's new administration.

Contact us at foodinstitute@berkeley.edu with feedback, questions or suggestions or sign up here to get more involved.

$8,300 raised-- Thank you for your support!

November 01, 2016

Dear Project Supporters,

We are excited to announce that we closed our campaign with a grand total of $8,298 raised, which represents 83% of our stretch goal and 138% of our original $6,000 goal! With your generous support, we will be able to fund the Foodscape mapping software, a "Map Reveal" event tentatively scheduled for late spring 2017 and the majority of a graduate student fellowship to help with these activities.

Thank you again for your wonderful support of Building Equitable and Inclusive Food Systems at UC Berkeley. We will be in touch periodically over the next several months with project updates and milestones. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or suggestions at any time!

Our very best to you,

Reminder: Faculty Panel Event Tomorrow!

October 25, 2016

Join Us this Wednesday 10/26 for the Building Equitable and Inclusive Food Systems Faculty Panel

This exciting event will feature discussion about the tangible and conceptual outcomes of undoing inequality in the context of the UC Berkeley food system. Learn and engage in discussion with the panelists about:

  • The forces/dynamics that shape our food system and hinder equity and inclusion in it, specifically financialization and corporate control/consolidation.
  • The inequalities that exist in growers gaining access to means of production, such as land and water and the rights of food and farm workers to control their work conditions.
  • Specific examples that highlight both food system exclusion and community-engaged efforts to build a more equitable and inclusive food system, including immigrant and minority farmers in California, urban food disparities, and food insecurity in Native American communities.
  • How dynamics in the larger food system play out at UC Berkeley and what can and should be done on campus to advance equity and inclusion within the campus food system and beyond.

The event is free and open to the public; registration is recommended.

We hope to see you there!

Join us for a Faculty Panel Event on October 26!

October 13, 2016

Building Equitable and Inclusive Food Systems Faculty Panel

This exciting event will feature discussion about the tangible and conceptual outcomes of undoing inequality in the context of the UC Berkeley food system. Panelists will address issues of student, faculty and staff representation and participation, with the aim of redesigning the social, cultural and political institutions that determine food studies and food access on campus.

Given that disparities in wealth, opportunity and privilege affect everything from research agendas to rates of student hunger, exclusion and marginalization remain a reality at UC Berkeley. Panelists will thus consider the question: In what ways could equity across our campus food system precipitate strategic steps toward a more humane, democratic, and inclusive society? This discussion will both grapple with theory and suggest practical solutions.

The event is free and open to the public; registration recommended. Special access available for crowdfunding donors who make a gift by Oct. 20!

Thank you and help us spread the word!
