Active for Alzheimer's

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. By mid-century, someone will develop the disease every 33 seconds as the baby boom generation reaches their senior years. In addition, more than 15 million Americans provide over 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. According to the CDC, Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death. There is no way to prevent this disease or slow its progress.

Active for Alzheimer’s is working towards fighting against these rising statistics by funding an undergraduate research scholarship for students who work in Alzheimer’s disease research laboratories. Through our scholarship initiative, we seek to inspire students to get involved in Alzheimer’s research to find a cure for this devastating disease, and we hope shape their future career path toward further Alzheimer’s innovations.

Another way that we hope to battle the effects of this disease is by volunteering with Alzheimer’s patients who need day-to-day care in the local Berkeley community. We have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay (ASEB) to bring student volunteers in direct contact with the patients who need our help the most. Most of ASEB’s clients (nearly 65%) are from low income families who struggle with the costs of memory care for their aging relatives. Through this project, we hope to enhance the lives of those spending their days at ASEB through craft projects, gardening, and music.

By raising awareness of the effects of this disease, we hope to improve the lives of those struggling with Alzheimer’s and prevent the disease from affecting future generations.

Starting this year we are launching an initiative to promote student research of Alzheimer’s disease in hopes of finding a cure. Your donation will go directly towards funding four $1,000 undergraduate research scholarships as well as towards raising awareness for the disease at the UC Berkeley campus and beyond.
