iGEM@Berkeley: An Accessible Biohacker Space

Our Story

Presently, we are facing a growing issue that there are simply not enough research opportunities or graduate mentors to accommodate the ever-increasing number of students interested in research. iGEM@Berkeley was founded on the principle that research should be accessible to all students. Through iGEM, our members will gain research experience and will naturally mature into mentors for a younger class of students--ultimately creating a self-sufficient, scalable research space.

Our Work

iGEM@Berkeley provides students the unique opportunity to perform original genetic engineering projects in a one-of-a-kind undergraduate-led research space. We are assembling a diverse team of determined students to design and build biotechnological solutions to real world environmental, medical, and technological problems. Past iGEM projects include engineering crops to be resistant to climate change, using bacteria to produce fuel, and even developing modified viruses as potential solutions to antibiotic resistance. Furthermore, students of iGEM@Berkeley may showcase their novel synthetic biology research at the international iGEM competition.

Donations

Every aspect of running our lab space, from writing grants to conducting experiments, is done by students. This means every dollar donated is critical to our operations. As you see our budget breakdown below, we have thousands of dollars in material costs for experimentation, equipment purchases, and competition travel. In short, your donations will allow students to bring their ideas to life--inspiring the next generation of bioengineers.
