Time magazine column calls for a halt to long Covid biomedical research...Why?

November 21, 2023

You can read about it in yesterday's post on Virology Blog.

As November enters the end stretch, the crowdfunder has reached 70% of the goal, with just under 300 donations--including 97 from the UK and 67 from the US. If you'd like to donate and help me continue to cover events in this field, please use this link:

One week in, with almost 20% of the goal reached...

November 07, 2023

Dear Past Supporter of Trial By Error:

The November campaign has gotten off to a decent start. Yesterday I posted a conversation with Lisa McCorkell, a co-founder of the Patient-Led Research Collaborative, about her recent Nature article calling for a "moonshot" to investigate long Covid. I try to keep these videos to 20 minutes or so to keep them easily viewable.

To donate to the current campaign, please use this link:

April campaign reaches 62% of the goal, with 102 gifts from UK and 65 from US--

Today I posted about three new stories concerning long Covid. You can read it here

April crowdfunding campaign passes 20% of the goal...

April 11, 2023

Last month, I posted an interview I'd conducted with Jaime Seltzer of #MEAction about her background, her work, the debate around "functional" disorders, and related issues. I should be posting a couple of more interviews later this month or next month.

April crowdfunding, and this week's post on a new JAMA article downplaying long Covid--

April 06, 2023

Dear Trial By Error Supporter:

This month's Berkeley crowdfunding is nearing its first hundred donations and 10% of the goal.

This week I wrote about a problematic new study in a JAMA journal that provides fodder for those seeking to minimize long Covid. The study also seeks to resuscitate the zombie Fukuda case definition for CFS from 1994, which has been largely abandoned.

This month is the 7-year anniversary of the launch of Trial By Error--

October 30, 2022

Yesterday, I posted some thoughts about my experiences since I began my efforts to debunk the fraudulent (ie deceitful, misleading) piece of crap known as the PACE trial. It has been quite a ride!!

This month's crowdfunder is ending at 11:59 pm Monday night. (That's California time, which in London time will be 7:59 am on Monday.)

If you would still like to donate to this month's campaign, here's the link:

Here's the link for my talk last week at Cambridge...

October 24, 2022

...about the use of epidemiology to obscure rather than enlighten. It covered PACE but also much else about the issue, with other examples of egregiously flawed studies. It's more than an hour, and I'm talking fast, and we had some technical glitches, but here it is. I also participated in a panel on patient advocacy/activism related to HIV, ME/CFS and long Covid. That link will be posted soon as well.

In the meantime, Berkeley's October crowdfunder has reached 61% of the goal, with seven days remaining. If you'd like to support my continuing efforts to debunk poor science, please consider a donation for this round.

Bristol University is functioning like a protection racket for misbehaving faculty--Professor Crawley in particular

October 23, 2022

As many know, I've been trying to find out why Bristol's methodologically and ethically challenged grant magnet, Professor Esther Crawley, did not correct seven of the 11 papers she was ordered to correct in a report issued three years ago. That report arose out of my complaints about her egregiously flawed work to the UK's Health Research Authority.

This week, I should hear from the HRA how Bristol has responded to a request for an explanation of why these corrections were not made. I'm very curious--did the dog eat Professor Crawley's missing corrections? Will Bristol hold this prominent faculty member to account for what, in my view, are repeated acts of research misconduct? (Answer; Very, very unlikely!)

If you'd like me to continue my efforts to debunk poor science and get to the facts, please consider a donation. (If you've already donated, sorry for these repeaed appeals!) Donations are tax-deductible in the US and in Canada.

A reminder about my talk at Cambridge today...

October 18, 2022

I'm talking today at the Center for the Study of Existential Risk (I didn't realize I've been studying "existential risk" about "Epidemiological Sleight-of-Hand: The Case of Medically Unexplained Symptoms," at 2 pm UK time. Of course, I'll talk about PACE--how could I not mention that piece of crap?--but I will cover a lot else as well.

Here's the link!

I'll be at Cambridge University next week...

October 14, 2022

I'll be doing two events next week in Cambridge. The first, on October 18th, is a talk on "epidemiological sleight-of-hand and "medically unexplained symptoms"--basically, how research into ME/CFS and other MUS is rife with methodological problems. On October 20th, I'm participating on a panel discussion about patient advocacy and activism. Both events will be webcast.

If you'd like me to continue my efforts to debunk poor science, please consider supporting my Berkeley project again this month, to cover January through June of 2023. Donations are tax-deductible in the US and in Canada. Here's the link:

October '22 crowdfunding has reached 34% of the goal...

October 12, 2022

...I'm very touched because it's such a tough time all around. But the CBT/GET ideological brigades are still out there promoting their wares--for long Covid now as well as ME/CFS--so I still feel I have work left to do.

If you'd like me to continue my efforts to debunk poor science, please consider supporting my Berkeley project again this month, to cover January through June of 2023. Donations are tax-deductible in the US and in Canada. Here's the link:

Trial by Error October crowdfunding campaign now underway...

October 03, 2022

Dear supporter of Trial By Error:

Last week, I posted a pre-print of a commentary on the terrible employment outcomes after treatment of ME/CFS with CBT and GET--it seems no one gets back to work, despite claims. The commentary has been submitted to a journal.

Also last week, the journal Brain published a letter I wrote that challenged an incredibly stupid study from NYU claiming that POTS was "psyhogenic." (The letter is behind a paywall but you can read the whole thing here.) Eight other experts co-signed the letter.

If you'd like to help me continue my efforts against the biopsychosocial ideological brigades, please consider supporting my project again this month. Donations are tax-deductible in the US and (I've been told) in Canada. Here is the link:

April 2022--The GET/CBT ideological brigades would like me to disappear--but I'm not done just yet

April 27, 2022

With the emergence of long Covid and the efforts of the PACE authors and their colleagues to extend their treatments to this new population, I decided to extend this project for another year. If you've bean meaning to support April's Trial By Error crowdfunder and have put it off, here's the link--and thank you!

Two More Weeks for April ''22 Crowdfunding...Lots of Work Still To Do!

April 17, 2022

Thanks so much for being a past supporter! This is a hard time to be crowdfunding, with so much going on in the world. I'm touched that the current Berkeley campaign for my Trial By Error project has now reached more than half of the goal--52%--with two weeks still to go.

I am planning to continue the project for one more academic year after this one--through June, 2023. This month's campaign will cover July through December of this year. I would prefer to be able to support my work through standard academic funding streams but that just hasn't been possible. i'm sorry to keep sending these reminders!
