Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization dedicated to developing and implementing long-term sustainable engineering solutions in communities that lack access to basic needs. Chapters work in partnership with the community and local NGOs to identify the most appropriate solution that can be sustained long term by the community. We exist to bring together talented students – both engineers and non-engineers – to work towards a common goal of philanthropic engineering abroad. We strive for sustainability in all of its forms: ensuring our projects utilize materials from the community, and guaranteeing that the necessary infrastructure and community acceptance is present to sustain the project after its implementation. Please make a gift today to support our efforts!
We currently have 4 active projects:
Nicaragua Sanitation: The Nicaragua Sanitation Program is focused on designing and building latrines for the community of Cuyali in the Madriz department of Nicaragua. The community reached out to EWB as their latrines, which have been used for longer than their intended lifespan, have been breaking down, resulting in families sharing latrines. Furthermore, the river near where the community lives constantly floods the community, including areas where the latrines are situated. As a result, people in the community have been getting sick due to poor hygiene. This semester we are looking forward to put the final details on our first construction plans and proceed with the implementation to build the first 5 composting latrines later in the semester. This has been the longest and most challenging phase of the project so far, and will present more challenges as we work with contractors to implement remotely.
Nicaragua Sanitation | Nicaragua Water |
Nicaragua Water: This project will plan to implement a data processor system to collect data from the water well such as water flow rates, chlorinator systems, and water level information. Moreover, the group has panned out ideas to construct solar photovoltaic systems to use solar energy as an energy source for the water pumping systems for the community. Lastly, the team has initiated efforts to describe and write manuals in Spanish and English for the community for installation procedures. With this in mind, we would also like to study the cultural aspects of the community and country to form relationships with the people and learn different manners to best help El Llanito during our implementation trips and meetings.
CEC: This project is a CECorps project working with the Church of the Nazarene in Vallejo. We will be configuring the utilities for mobile homes on the church’s property. Two families already live on the property and are relying on garden hoses for water, generators for electricity, and open carrying buckets for sanitary waste. Our workplan includes adding 5 more TinyHomes, which has been approved by the client. We have finished preliminary designs for the sewer, water, and electric utilities for the new homes, and will be submitting them for review by the city in the first few months of 2022! We are looking forward to a productive semester!
Project 4: This semester, Project 4 is continuing the process of trying to adopt a project. We are excited to be working with the ASUC to figure out whether potential projects are fiscally suitable for our club, and we can't wait to jump straight into work once a project has been successfully adopted!
