Pie Queens 2022 - Back and Better Than Ever!

After nearly two grueling years since the COVID-19 pandemic ended our most recent competitive season, we are extremely grateful to say that the UC Berkeley Pie Queens are back and ready to compete in a full schedule of tournaments this spring! After our season was cut short in Spring 2020, we had no choice but to practice on a strictly virtual basis for the entirety of Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. The unfortunate truth is that it was really difficult to feel the same connection through online interactions and this period of time was rough on us all. Now that we’ve finally returned to in-person practices as of last fall, we’ve realized more than ever how much joy this program brings to our lives.

The Pie Queens program has been around since 1988 which means this will be our 34th year in the business! In a typical fall season we compete as one big team and travel to tournaments throughout Northern California. Fall is all about team bonding and skill development. This last fall we were able to make it to one tournament in Chico where we all had the time of our lives.

The BIGGEST SMILES you've ever seen after we got to play in the Chico tournament last fall!

Was all this dress up just a flair practice or was it Halloween? We love that either of these answers are realistic!

In the spring, we split into our A and B teams: the Queens and Tarts. The Queens will attend regular season tournaments in San Diego, Stevinson, and Seattle as well as scrimmage neighboring teams like Stanford Superfly. They have earned two appearances at Nationals in the past few years, placing 9th in 2016 and returning in 2017 for another 9th place finish. With the unpredictability of teams this coming season, who knows what could happen but the Queens definitely have their sights set on nationals!

The Tarts are regionally competitive, and attend tournaments in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, and Irvine. Tarts are a great team for those looking to continue developing their skills under a more flexible commitment expectation. Although the teams practice and play separately in the spring, we still get to spend a lot of time together and both teams have dedicated coaches, strong veteran leadership, and an abundance of fun!

In order to continue expanding this program, we need your help! Fundraising helps us relieve some of the financial burden so that being a member of the program does not deter any individuals from joining. We have a team of dedicated and passionate coaches who volunteer their time to help us improve, but there are still many costs associated with the sport. We will use the donations to pay for tournament fees, travel, field space, uniforms, and equipment, and to help make the program more accessible and affordable to everyone by offsetting the cost of team dues. Additionally, due to extra health precautions that we are taking to ensure the safety of our team in the midst of a global pandemic, our costs for housing, travel, and health supplies are significantly higher than they have been in the past.

With your donation, we can continue building this magical program and increasing the accessibility of our sport. Help us reach our goal of $3000! If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this link with anyone you know. We are very grateful for any and all of your support!
