Meeting with State Legislators, Analysts and Advisors

Help us take our student cohorts to the

State Capitol in Sacramento!

The Developing Child Summer Minor and Certificate Program is a developmental science program offering innovative training for students interested in working with or on behalf of children ages 0-8. Integrating research, practice, and policy with problem-solving skills for the real world, our novel program enriches participants with an interdisciplinary approach to improving children's lives.

Previously, we have provided students with a variety of in-person, hands-on activities to enrich their program experience. In Summer 2019, the cohort took a trip to the State Capitol in Sacramento to meet with State Legislators, Policy Analysts, and State Assembly Advisors. They also visited the Department of Education where they met with the California Deputy Superintendent.

We are asking for your support to offer this experience to our Summer 2022 cohort (and some alum who missed out, due to the Covid-19 pandemic). This day at the Capitol would be an exciting culmination for our students to experience firsthand the dynamic connections among early childhood research, practice, and policy.

Trip to D School, Stanford University, Summer 2019

In Summer 2022, we want to continue providing our students with valuable, one of a kind experiences that will help them apply the interdisciplinary and integrated content our program offers. The funds raised through this campaign will once again support a variety of hands-on activities for our student cohort and help fund a trip to the State Capitol.

Cost Breakdown:

  1. UC Berkeley Chartered Bus: $1,412.00 (8 hrs x $176.50)
  2. Bag Lunches for 55 people: $591.25 (55 x $10.95 per lunch)

Read what some of our past students have to say about the program!

"The Developing Child Summer Minor has been one of my favorite experiences at Cal. The way the program integrates Research, Policy, and Practice really helped me decide what role I want to play in working with children and their families. Most importantly, the small cohort, comprising of both students and faculty, actively created a supportive and safe environment that allowed all of us to learn and grow together." - PC, Summer 2020 Cohort Member

"This program is filled with passionate professors who encourage personal growth in all of us. The community, the content, and the new understanding we have on child development is something that will truly stay with each and everyone of the students for the rest of our lives. This program was impactful in so many ways beyond academic achievement." - MR, Summer 2020 Cohort Member

"Coming from a MCB background, I constantly felt like my classes limited my understanding of real world applications. The cells, amino acids, and molecules that I was learning about from my MCB classes were so small that it was often hard to broaden my perspective. The Developing Child minor, on the other hand, allowed me to look at child development from psychology, public health, and public policy perspectives. It took all my previous studies and connected it to long-term impacts and issues within our current healthcare system. This minor was truly a step forward for my education and is a program that I will always be grateful for." - VK, Summer 2021 Cohort Member
