Over the last 2 years, a team of UC Berkeley students under Haas Professor David Levine have developed a curriculum to teach preventative health in underprivileged regions. In prototyping our materials, we learned the most effective way to change behavior is through interactive styles of learning, such as stories, games, and songs. The core of our material has focused on handwashing, sanitation, and safe water. We now work with students and faculty at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as well as local experts from Asia, Africa, and South America to improve our materials.
The last two summers we piloted our lessons in Chennai, India. The children enjoyed our material and more importantly, adopted healthier habits. We have adapted our curriculum to incorporate the researchers' feedback and suggestions.
Your donation will help send UC Berkeley undergraduate researchers to our partner schools in Chennai, India, where they will implement the next draft of our curriculum and serve as global liaisons. The researchers will train local teachers in the new approach and their reports will allow us to further improve and scale our curriculum. Your contribution will also supply classrooms with our materials.
If we surpass our goal, we would like to raise additional funds to hire a full-time local project manager and purchase tablets to distribute our curriculum digitally.
After another successful summer, we plan to share our materials with global non-profits, who will help us disseminate our lessons to schools and after-school programs around the world.
