Support the Next Generation of Early Career Higher Education Researchers

The Center for Studies in Higher Education at UC Berkeley sponsors the annual David P. Gardner Seminar for doctoral students across multiple disciplines who are conducting research related to higher education.  In the past several years, more than 60 doctoral students have participated in this seminar, and in 2020, the Center expanded the program to include applicants from across the UC system. The 11 doctoral students selected for the 2022-2023 seminar represent eight UC campuses (Berkeley, Los Angeles, Riverside, Irvine, Santa Cruz, Davis, San Diego and Santa Barbara).

Meeting remotely, the fellows examine critical issues facing higher education by presenting their research to their peers and by learning from leading higher education scholars and administrators. This seminar has created a community of early-career researchers in higher education and has provided a unique opportunity for collaboration across the UC system.

Through their research, the 2022-23 Gardner Fellows address many areas of concern for diverse and first-generation student populations in California. These topics include student experiences on campus, financial aid, the impact of college rankings, the transition from community colleges to four-year colleges and disability issues. Not only do these issues affect underrepresented students across California, the Gardner Fellows themselves represent the next generation of higher education researchers and their Asian, Latino, African American, Muslim, and Native American communities.

Our Goal

With $10,000, we aim to prepare Gardner Fellows for higher education careers in a diverse world. Since these doctoral students are located across the California, they have been meeting remotely only. This funding will cover travel expenses and bring Gardner Fellows together for professional development at UC Berkeley.
