STEM occupations are in high demand and continue to be the fastest growing, however less than 10% of science jobs are held by underrepresented minorities and women. The College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley aims to enhance the diversity at the College and address this issue by eliminating the barriers for those who have the desire to enter the chemical sciences through the College of Chemistry Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice (DEIBJ) initiative.
The College of Chemistry DEIBJ Initiative was established to focus attention on recruiting and retaining students who will help enhance the diversity at the College through introducing new and innovating current programming, such as:
Chem 102: Foundations of Discovery Learning for College of Chemistry Transfer Students – Students were guided to develop and engage in creative discovery experiences and will be provided with advice and support to assist in their transition to the College. This new one-credit, seminar style course was introduced this fall and designed exclusively for incoming transfer students.
Transfer Student Mentorship Program – a program founded by College of Chemistry graduate students to facilitate the transition of transfer students to the College. At the heart of this program lies one-on-one mentorship between transfer students and current chemistry graduate students.
