Who are we?
The UC Berkeley Pie Queens is a nationally competitive D1 ultimate frisbee team for women, non-binary, and trans athletes at Cal. The core identity of the Pie Queens is rooted in inclusivity, joy, and personal growth. We pride ourselves in being a space where athletes of all levels of experience can come to unleash their competitive spirit, play on a team alongside great friends, and become a part of an incredibly supportive ultimate community that goes far beyond college. This team is undoubtedly a highlight of our members' college experiences and we are happy that we get to be a part of growing this sport.
In the fall, we play as one big Pie Queens program where the focus is all about team bonding and skill development. Then in the spring, we split into our A and B teams, the Queens and Tarts, to take on the competitive season. We have a total of seven awesome coaches who generously volunteer their time to keep this program as strong as it is. As a full program we get to take our teams to 12+ tournaments in a school year! Why support us?
We are asking for your support so that the financial burden of being a member of this team does not deter any individuals from joining. Some of the main ways we use your donations to make the program more accessible/affordable are by:
As a Cal Sport Club team, the cost of competing comes almost entirely out of members' pockets. By donating to our program, you are helping us grow all athletes in the program to their full potential. Many PQ alumni go on to coach and are heavily involved in the Bay Area ultimate community and beyond. We even have a current PQ coaching youth ultimate this season!
A little Pie Queens history
Our program has been around since 1988 and has been growing ever since. Somewhere along the lines, our team made the life changing decision to stop at a diner in Oakland called Lois the Pie Queen after a weekend of ultimate. The food was amazing, but the team agreed that the highlight of their meal was the pie! They offered a wide variety of pies including apple, sweet potato, lemon ice box, berry, cherry, pecan...the list goes on! And so, the UC Berkeley Women's Ultimate team, the Pie Queens, found their namesake in this delicious local restaurant and ever since, they've been loyal customers. This black-owned business has been serving delicious soul food for over 50 years and we couldn't recommend supporting them enough!
