Year in and year out, Berkeley Journalism students find good-paying jobs in the field; look under the hood of any quality media shop, and you’ll find our journalism grads doing great work as investigative reporters, documentary filmmakers, podcasters, editors, and more.
One reason for this is the summer internship that students do at the end of their first year. It’s a transformative experience.
But there’s a problem, and it’s one you can help us solve: only about half of the participating newsrooms can pay their summer interns the $5,000 it costs to do the internship. Many of Berkeley Journalism’s students can’t afford an unpaid internship: they often are the first in their generation to go to college or have substantial family obligations to deal with.
That’s why Berkeley Journalism is committed to raising funds for the summer internship program - so that no one will be prevented from doing their summer internship due to financial difficulties.
During the month of October, we’re aiming to raise enough to deliver stipends for 7 summer interns. Your donation today will go directly to support the Class of 2025. They’ll spend next summer in news organizations throughout the United States, immersing themselves in the world of reporting, helping ensure that accurate, credible and fact-based stories remain accessible to the communities they serve. And they’ll get a crucial head start on their professional lives.
What’s more, every dollar will get us closer to releasing a $10,000 challenge gift from a generous donor for the campaign. No matter how much you can give - whether it’s $25 or $250 or $25,000 - your donation will make all the difference.
