Cal Ballroom is UC Berkeley's competitive ballroom dance team. We have been introducing Berkeley students to the world of ballroom dance for over 20 years, by providing lessons, coaches, and hosting two competitions a year. Our members learn ten dances, including International Standard dances like waltz, tango, and foxtrot; and International Latin dances like cha cha and samba. Members from our team attend competitions across the state and the country, and have placed and won at national competitions.
Giving our members the opportunity to compete at this level takes an enormous amount of resources. Additionally, the pandemic took a heavy toll - we could not hold practices for two years, and almost all of our intermediate and advanced dancers graduated in that time. We hope to regrow a community of dancers from the ground up and provide quality dance education. To continue to hire our professional coaches and host our major intercollegiate competition, we need your support.
In the past year, despite our smaller team and substantially increased competition costs, we were still able to maintain our quality coaches and host our competition. However, it was a significant strain on our resources. We hope to raise money to provide scholarship funds and subsidies for team members this year. This will make lessons with coaches more accessible, and allow members to travel more for competitions.
We want to help as many people as possible have the opportunity to dance. Ballroom can be an expensive sport, so we do our best to make it accessible for our fellow students and our community.
We are a large and incredibly close-knit group, so the gratitude of even one student helped is multiplied throughout the team. Our team loves dancing more than anything, so please help us continue to dance by sending a gift! Thank you for your support, from all of us at Cal Ballroom!
