Laya of Berkeley is a unique music club at the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 2015, we aim to bring the intricacies and flows of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music to the diverse, cosmopolitan environment of Cal and the larger Bay Area. Comprised of vocalists and instrumentalists, we perform pure classical pieces as well as fusions with other classical and Western styles. We also invite and host professionals and performers in free lectures and concerts. In all our endeavors we hope to find and foster the rhythm of Berkeley and bring different parts of the world together through our art.
Free concerts organized by Laya of Berkeley make live Carnatic music accessible to the public and provide a unique cultural and musical experience that is not widely available in mainstream events. However, these concerts are not cheap for us to put on and our biggest challenge right now is the artist fees. Artist fees for Carnatic and Hindustani professional musicians are high and we often have to turn down artists because we can't afford to host them. We also do not ticket our concerts to eliminate any barriers for the community to experience the wonders of classical music.
In addition to paying artists, we also pay for concert venues. With your donations, we can rent bigger event spaces to accommodate for more concert-goers and give artists the stage they deserve for sharing their music with us.
This semester, we would love to make merchandise such as t-shirts and sweatshirts to sell at our concerts to raise funds and foster a stronger sense of community among our members.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our club and hope to see you at a future Laya concert or performance! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via the email below.
