Formula Electric at Berkeley needs your help!

Formula Electric at Berkeley, or FEB, is UC Berkeley's premier electric race car team. We are a dynamic team of 150 undergraduate and graduate students who are united by the drive to realize a future of sustainable transportation. FEB educates its members on how to research, design, manufacture, and test efficient, sustainable transportation technology at UC Berkeley to ultimately compete in the annual Formula SAE International Electric Competition.

Our crowdfunding campaign originates from our financial struggles that continually make it difficult for our team to push the boundaries of innovative design. Due to our lack of funding, our team has to be extremely frugal and this forces us to compromise between quality and cost-effectiveness. Despite successfully securing mentorship and supplies from sponsors, our team faces ongoing challenges in meeting our financial needs due to the absence of funding from the school. We rely significantly on donations to sustain our efforts. Your contribution, no matter the size, holds immense value and is pivotal in allowing us to pursue our passion for building an electric race car.

Based on last year’s budget and our strategic plans for the 2023-24 season, our projected manufacturing budget stands at approximately $32,000, shown in the diagram below. The money raised from this campaign will be dedicated to our inaugural aerodynamics package. Crafted from carbon fiber, our vehicle will have a front wing and rear wing, which will help provide downforce to the car allowing us to reach greater speeds. Based on simulations, our current aerodynamics package will reduce lap times by 4-5 seconds. With this addition, we expect to compete for a position in the top 10 at Competition.

Through your contribution, we can provide more opportunities for our members to engage in hands-on design and manufacturing work, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration, and sustainable innovation. All funds raised past our initial goal will go towards manufacturing a regenerative braking system, personal protective equipment, steel space frame chassis, suspension system, sheet metal, braking components, and much more.

Learn more about the Competition

FSAE International is a global event endorsed by the Society of Automotive Engineers that puts the world's top universities in head-to-head competition in a challenge of automotive design and engineering. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style electric race car. At the competition, the team and car are put to the test in a grueling series of events. "Static" events test our engineering and design. "Dynamic" events push the limits of the car's acceleration, cornering, and overall performance in an autocross and 22-km endurance race. The competition is judged by experts from the motorsports, automotive, aerospace, and supplier industries.

Learn more about FEB

Every year, our vehicle's subsystems are designed, assembled, and manufactured in-house by students in the College of Engineering. FEB also supports the learning and development of students pursuing careers in business through finance, marketing, outreach, and operations activities. To complete our goals, our team is divided into four divisions:

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Team is responsible for designing and assembling the vehicle’s high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.
Electrical Leads, Smit and Amal, assembling printed circuit boards

The Mechanical Engineering Team is responsible for designing and manufacturing the vehicle’s spaceframe, suspension and steering systems, motor and drive train, braking and pedal box design, aerodynamics, and ergonomics.

The Autonomous Team creates cutting-edge self-driving solutions by utilizing machine learning models for object detection and sensor fusion, implementing algorithms such as SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping) and MPC (Model predictive control) for vehicle localization, and manufacturing drive-by-wire systems to enable autonomous driving capabilities while also conducting simulations for comprehensive testing.

The Business and Operations Team handles all partnerships and operations that bring our engineering ideas to reality! We work directly with leaders in the EV space to collaborate on events that showcase our commitment to sustainable transportation technology. We also cover media marketing for all our events, sponsorships, and recruitment efforts, as well as manage the financial processes for our large-scale engineering project.
