In 1915, at a time when women physicians were an underrepresented minority and in need of cooperative action by women in medicine, AMWA became the first national organization of women physicians. AMWA entered the political arena on behalf of women physicians fighting for policy reform that resulted in career advancement and leadership roles for women doctors.
AMWA Berkeley is a local undergraduate branch that is part of the National AMWA framework! We seek to empower our members by giving a loving and supportive platform for voices to be heard and transform ideas into realities. We love to discuss topics of women in medicine, women's health, and gender equity. As a professional and community service organization, AMWA Berkeley offers opportunities for mentorship, professional development, volunteering, and support for individuals interested in healthcare careers.
The Berkeley branch of AMWA has both chapter-wide events and specific committees for individuals to thrive and work toward what they're passionate about.
We operate through 5 committees: Gender and Sexual Health, Cancer and Womxn's Health, Childhood Nutrition and Education, Diversity in Medicine, and Mental Health. As a part of these committees, members are able to focus their efforts into planning events and campaigns to support or raise awareness for the topics that they are most passionate about.

As the largest pre-medical organization on campus and the largest undergraduate AMWA chapter, AMWA Berkeley has been able to support thousands of female-identifying pre-medical students on their journeys. Your support will go directly towards funding programs and events that will allow our members to develop professionally and support the advancement of women's health.
These include our annual pre-health symposium during which physicians, medical students, and various Berkeley pre-health organizations all come together to support the pre-health community, and funding events and programs related to member development (such as our Big-Little mentorship program and our end-of-semester banquet). This year, we are also partnering with the Society of Women in Medicine at UCSF to match AMWA members with UCSF medical students mentors. For our mentorship meetup event, we would need to allocate funds to securing suturing kits, as well as UCSF's Anatomy lab and ultrasound machine, so that Berkeley undergraduate students can gain insight into what it's like to pursue higher education in medicine.
The funds will also go to our committees and will be used to support committee specific goals, such as putting together care packages for the pediatric oncology unit at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, hosting Period Drives and bake sales where all donations and profits are donated to the Women's Daytime Drop-in Center, sharing nutritional recipes with the Berkeley Farmers Market and local elementary schools, providing mentorship to Berkeley High School students, promoting mental health on campus through wellness tabling, and many more projects driven by the creative freedom and passions of committee members.
Depending on when the funds arrive but most likely during the spring semester for our main events. We aim to help female students at Berkeley form a community and grow professionally through their journey in medicine. Reaching our goal would allow us to host more events and would allow us to educate the new generation of female doctors more.
We greatly appreciate any and all support and we look forward to dedicating your generosity towards empowering women in healthcare! Thank you so much!
