Work+Learn = Succeed

NEW GOAL: $25,000 and all donations doubled!

Thank you to all our wonderful Library supporters who helped us reach our original goal! A generous Library donor has increased their challenge match to $25K, so now all donations up to our new goal are doubled. Our wonderful donor perks are all still available to help us reach our new goal. Thank you!

The world’s best public university can’t succeed without a world-class library. And the UC Berkeley Library can’t succeed without its exceptional student workers.

The Library employs more than 600 students in its Work+Learn program each year in roles that are vital to the successful operation of Library services and spaces. Students offer a welcoming presence at our many entrances, help digitize materials so they can be discovered online, and assist scholars on research projects that change the world, among many other essential tasks.

When you support students in the Library’s Work+Learn program, you support the entire Cal community. If you love UC Berkeley, consider a gift that impacts all of its students and scholars.

Student worker success stories

  • An industrial engineering student put her learning into action by assessing the Resources Sharing Division’s layout and processes. Her work has helped the team more effectively share books and other resources with scholars around the world.

  • By managing The Bancroft Library’s Instagram account, a media studies student got to share the many marvels of the library’s archives while sharpening his career skills in public speaking, writing, and video and photo editing.

  • Thanks to a job in the Preservation Department, a student discovered her passion for the conservation of historical materials. She has gone on to a postgraduate program in the field.

3 reasons students love to work at the Library

1. Convenience

Students are already on campus, so it’s easy to work before, between, or after classes. Hours are flexible and supervisors are supportive. And students can pay part of their tuition as they go!

2. Careers

Library jobs can often complement classroom learning. For some students, it may be their first real-world work experience. Others sharpen their skills in leadership, team-building, and problem-solving.

3. Community

Work+Learn students serve in vital roles in 20 libraries across campus, offering customer service and research support to peers, faculty members, and scholars worldwide.

The Student Work+Learn Fund supports the Library as one of UC Berkeley’s leading student employers. Through its Work+Learn program, the Library provides students of all backgrounds with a financial boost and important résumé-building experience in roles ranging from cataloging foreign language materials to producing podcasts. Gifts to this fund directly impact students and allow the library to continue to offer more jobs to students who need the financial support. All donations, whether the goal is unmet or exceeded, will go towards more job openings, breadth of experiences, and resources for students.
