Cal Boxing to 2025 Nationals!

About Us

Founded in 1916, the UC Berkeley Boxing Club (Cal Boxing) is the longest continuously established collegiate boxing program in the nation. We compete in intercollegiate boxing events as members of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA), sanctioned by USA Boxing. Our club is open to all students, regardless of skill level, and we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who want to learn the sweet science of boxing.

In the 108th year of our storied history, Cal Boxing continues to shine. Most recently, Alejandro Rojas, a freshman, defied the odds to win the men’s 132-pound division at the 2024 NCBA National Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina. His rapid rise to success is a testament to the dedication and skill developed in our program. Rojas joins a proud tradition of champions, following in the footsteps of past winners such as Lea Chambadal, who captured the women’s 132-pound title in 2023.

With a rich legacy of developing champions both in and out of the ring, our club emphasizes character, leadership, and resilience. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jon Zaul, a former team captain and longtime coach, we aim to cultivate not just top-tier athletes, but also well-rounded individuals who can handle the challenges of life. Every year, hundreds of students express interest in joining our team, and while our roster is limited to 30-60 boxers, our focus extends beyond competition. We believe that boxing is an educational experience, fostering personal growth and teamwork as much as it builds physical skill.

At Cal Boxing, we are more than a team—we are a community. Join us and become part of a tradition that spans over a century of excellence.

Funding and Support

As a fully student-run team, Cal Boxing receives no financial assistance from UC Berkeley or Sports Clubs. This means that all of our expenses—including travel, gear, competition fees, and coaching—are funded directly by our athletes and through fundraising efforts. As we continue to grow and compete at the national level, so do our financial needs.

Your generous contributions play a critical role in supporting our program. Donations help cover key expenses such as:

  • 70% for travel and accommodations, ensuring our athletes can compete in major tournaments across the country
  • 20% for community events and outreach, helping us engage with the broader Berkeley community
  • 10% for athlete fuel and nutrition, so our boxers can perform at their best

All donations are tax-deductible and go directly towards our operating costs. Your support, no matter the amount, makes a significant impact on our ability to pursue excellence both in and out of the ring. If we don’t meet our goal, your contribution will still go towards essential expenses like travel to competitions, which is our top priority. If we exceed our goal, additional funds will further enhance the program.

Please consider making a donation today and helping us continue to grow, compete, and foster a positive community for all our athletes.
