Since being founded in 2003, we have grown in both size and impact. Our team now has over 80 members, with around 25 traveling to competitions throughout the academic year. In addition to being full-time students and athletes, many members of our team are active in other clubs across campus. We are a diverse group of students, ranging from English to engineering to business majors, but we are connected by shared principles of competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
Cal Figure Skating is an entirely student-run organization with no coaches or managers. As such, we pay out-of-pocket for practice time, transportation, competition fees, and other associated costs out of love for the sport. Understandably, these expenses add up, and as our team continues to grow, so do our costs. So, we are enlisting the help of our community to allow our team to keep flourishing and competing nationally.
Insufficient funding can easily be a limiting factor due to the cost of flights, car rentals, hotels, and registration fees required for each skater to participate in often out-of-state competitions. Our team receives no funding from the university, so the budget we have to cover some of these costs comes entirely from funds we raise through fundraising. All funds raised will go toward competition fees to ensure that every student has the chance to participate as a member of Cal Figure Skating.
Budget: Average per-participant cost (prices are calculated for the full academic year)
Expenses | Cost per Skater |
Flights | $800 |
Practice Ice | $500 |
Competition Ice | $80 |
Entry Fees | $330 |
Rental Cars & Gas | $130 |
Hotel | $300 |
Food | $100 |
All estimates are rough only, and actual expenditures may vary.
Our average cost per student-athlete per competition season is about $2200. This per-participant cost includes travel and lodging at competitions, competition entry fees, practice ice, and equipment. Our competitive team of 26 student-athletes makes the cost of keeping us competitive at the national level around $60,000 per competitive season. By raising at least $5000, we will be able to cover the hotel costs for a competitive season. Regardless of whether we meet or surpass our goal, all and any funds will go towards reducing the financial burden of collegiate figure skating on our student-athletes.
This season, we have competed in one Pacific Coast Section qualifying competition. We have two more competitions in February to qualify for the National Intercollegiate final. Our competitions this season include:
Cal Figure Skating has qualified for the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships every year since 2011, and has placed in 2012 (Pewter), 2013 (Pewter), and 2015 (Pewter). Cal Figure Skating has won the title of Pacific Coast Sectional Champions in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022.
