Sustaining Latin Dance through Salsa at Cal
Salsa at Cal is a student-led dance organization at UC Berkeley. Salsa is a mix of Jazz, Latin American, and Afro-Caribbean influences. Every Tuesday night on campus, we host a dancing social scene and provide lessons for 50+ students, fostering a diverse community through Latin melodies and movements! Every lesson is taught by Salsa at Cal’s talented performance leaders! Each year, our club continues to dramatically expand as we attract dancers of all levels, who are gaining self-confidence and can physically and emotionally destress by expressing themselves through dancing! Our growing popularity is leading to a much-needed expansion of Salsa’s committees.
Performers Rene Gallegos and Diego SotomayorYour support for Salsa at Cal will go toward four microphone sets that are needed for our weekly salsa open práctica, which will help us communicate with the 50+ students who attend. Additionally, it will enable us to pay for venues we will use throughout the year for showcases that allow us to share our dance the entire Berkeley community. We are here to teach everyone, to encourage them to be part of our Salsamilia, and show them the beauty of Latin dance styles with Latin music!
Anticipated Costs for the Fall 2025 Semester:
- Microphone headset to use for open práctica, teaching materials: $250
- Venue Fee: $3950
- Live Music Fee: $350
- Student performance team: ~$1230 /semester
- Transportation (out-of-state congresses/festivals) $300
- Accommodations (Food, water, travel necessities): $150
- Uniforms $780
- Community initiatives: $150
Total Projected Expenses: $5930 | All estimates are rough only, and actual expenditures may vary.
If our goal is not reached, the allocated funds will still be used for the same projects; however, they may have to be realized at smaller scales. These funds are crucial for offsetting the cost and taking financial strain off our students who want to pursue their passions!
