Cal Women's Rugby's Quest for Nationals
Cal Women's Rugby (CWR) was formed in 1998. It is an entirely student-operated team where all finances and expenses are covered by donations, fundraising, and player dues. We foster a competitive and supportive atmosphere for womxn to learn and grow in the sport of rugby. As a no-cut team, we welcome players of all experience levels. In fact, most of our athletes first discovered rugby through CWR and many have gone to compete at higher levels!
CWR competes in the CRAA Division 1 Pacific Mountain Rugby Conference, playing against Chico State, Fresno State, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, Sac State, Cal Poly SLO, and Stanford. Our journey has not been easy as our team struggled to rebuild after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, we struggled to field a full team for most matches and finished with zero wins in the conference season.
CWR at 2025 7s CRAA National ChampionshipBy the 2025 season, CWR had grown into one of the most competitive programs in the nation. With a talented group of rookies and returnees, we finished the conference season with a 4-1 record, and fought our way through the playoffs ladder. CWR closed out its season with a hard-fought battle at the CRAA D1 National Championships. This growth is a testament of our team's resilience, determination and strength of our community, both on and off the pitch.

CWR relies on fundraising to keep our program going. The funds are directly used to to pay for team travel, fair compensation for our coaches, and other essential operating costs. One of our biggest goals every year is to go to playoffs and nationals. Reaching this level of competition often requires out of state travel, which is very costly for our team. We are fortunate to have alumni and local rugby experts who dedicate their time to coaching and mentoring our players, and fundraising also helps us fairly compensate them for their impact and commitment.
