Founded in 1915, the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) became the first national organization dedicated to supporting women physicians at a time when they were largely underrepresented. Through advocacy and policy reform, AMWA has played a critical role in advancing leadership opportunities for women in medicine.
AMWA Berkeley is the largest undergraduate AMWA chapter and pre-medical organization on campus, operating under the national framework. Our mission is to empower female-identifying students by providing a supportive community where ideas become action. We focus on women in medicine, women’s health, and gender equity through mentorship, professional development, community service, and advocacy.
Our chapter operates through five committees: Gender & Sexual Health, Cancer Awareness & Advocacy, Childhood Nutrition & Education, Diversity in Medicine, and Mental Health. The funds will also go to our committees and will be used to support committee specific goals, such as putting together care packages for the pediatric oncology unit at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, hosting Period Drives and bake sales where all donations and profits are donated to the Women's Daytime Drop-in Center, sharing nutritional recipes with the Berkeley Farmers Market and local elementary schools, providing mentorship to Berkeley High School students, promoting mental health on campus through wellness tabling, and many more projects driven by the creative freedom and passions of committee members.

Your support directly funds programs that help our members grow professionally and support women’s health initiatives. These include our annual Pre-Health Symposium, Big-Little mentorship program, end-of-semester banquet, and our partnership with the UCSF Society of Women in Medicine that pairs our members with medical student mentors. Funding will also support hands-on mentorship events, including access to suturing kits and anatomy lab experiences.
Funds will primarily be used during the spring semester. If we do not meet our fundraising goal, we will prioritize essential programs such as mentorship and the Pre-Health Symposium. If we exceed our goal, we will expand programming, increase access to hands-on learning, and reach more students. In all cases, funds will be allocated thoughtfully to maximize impact and further our mission of empowering the next generation of women in medicine.
