ToxSA directly supports students interested in the field of toxicology and related disciplines by providing mentorship, career preparation, and opportunities to apply toxicology to research experiences and community outreach. Past projects have included the Lead Education Awareness Program (LEAP) which spread awareness about household hazards and air pollution at local East Bay schools. This year, ToxSA is proud to collaborate with the California Academy of Sciences to offer an eight-session workshop for high schoolers in San Francisco. But we need your help!
ToxSA is excited to partner with the Careers in Sciences program at the California Academy of Sciences where we will be working with local students who are underrepresented in STEM on a semester-long toxicology project, introducing them to vital skills in chemistry, microbiology, and environmental science. Experiments will include dose-response toxicity with bioluminescent bacteria, as well as bioremediation using mealworms, among others. This project requires months of experimental design and course planning -- our team is developing an entire curriculum, designing experiments, and running preliminary trials to ensure that each activity is engaging, successful, and safe for students. We need support to purchase laboratory materials and basic scientific equipment; funding will directly enable students from the Bay Area community to participate in inquiry-driven science and encourage future careers in STEM!

Approximate Cost Per Member:
- Transportation to and from California Academy of Sciences ~ $8
- Weekly meeting supplies (snacks, interactive learning materials, etc) ~ $2
- Club socials ~ $10
- Club retreat ~ $40
Our average cost per member per semester is around $60, including learning materials, transportation, and network-building socials and retreats. While we have a network of over 150 students, we have an active core of about 20 members, leading to an overhead of $1200 per semester. Additionally, this semester, we have the unique cost of testing the experiments and lessons that we’ll be delivering this spring at the California Academy of Sciences! Raising an additional $850 would make a huge difference in our ability to inspire the next generation of high school scientists at the California Academy Sciences. Additionally, it will provide the much-needed financial backing to support networking events, including our annual networking night with the Society of Toxicology, retreats, and resume building events at nearby colleges. All estimates are rough only and actual expenditures may vary.
All funds raised will contribute to covering costs for both our weekly meetings (professional development, socials, educational material) and our joint program with the California Academy of Sciences, regardless of if we meet our goal or not – every dollar helps! Thank you for supporting ToxSA!
