A long, long time ago, the UC Berkeley women's ultimate team decided to stop at Lois the Pie Queen in Oakland, CA for some food after a fantastic weekend of ultimate. They had never been to this slice of heaven before, so they were excited to find that Lois served some good ol' soul food. It just so happened that one particular item stood out above the rest... THE PIES! There was apple, sweet potato, lemon ice box, berry, cherry, pecan...the list goes on! These pies were the best. things. ever. and so, our team decided to name ourselves after Lois the Pie Queen and have been loyal customers ever since!
The Pie Queens have strong roots and have been around since 1988. The Pie Queens program is focused on continual growth and currently has around 50 members! In the Fall, everyone is a Pie Queen! We play together, compete in tournaments, and have plenty of fun.
In the spring, we split into an A and a B team: Queens and Tarts. The Queens are nationally competitive, and attend spring tournaments in San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palo Alto, and Seattle. In the 2016 season, the Queens had a 9th place finish at Nationals in Raleigh, NC. The Queens are currently ranked as one of the top ten teams in the U.S. and hope to return to Nationals in Cincinnati, OH this May!
The Tarts are regionally competitive, and attend tournaments in LA, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, and Irvine. Both teams practice 3 times per week at our Cal’s Memorial Stadium. Although the teams practice and play separately in the Spring, we still get to spend a lot of time together and both teams have dedicated coaches, strong veteran leadership, and TONS. OF. FUN.
Players come and go, but once a Pie Queen, always a Pie Queen (#PQ4Lyfe) and every year we reunite at our alumni tournament where rookies and "retired" vets can meet and play together.
This program has given Cal women an opportunity to try a new sport, be a part of a great community, and make life long friends. In order to continue the growth and longevity of the program, we need to fundraise so that the financial burden of being a member of the program does not deter any individuals from joining. We would use the donations to purchase new equipment, and help make the program more accessible/affordable by offsetting the cost of team dues. We would love to host more clinics to share the sport with younger kids, especially girls. We have teamed up previously with BAWSI (Bay Area Women’s Sports Incentive) to volunteer as coaches in sports events for the girls, but often we had low numbers because of transportation costs. Your donation will not only allow us to keep our program running and accessible but also maintain the quality of our program by having proper equipment as well as amazing and dedicated coaches that volunteer their time for us at practices and tournaments.
