Our Crowdfunding Groups
Golden Bear Competitive Bhangra (fondly known as Cal Bhangra) was formed to promote awareness of the Punjabi Culture at UC Berkeley through the expression of traditional, folk Punjabi dance. By creating a group full of young, passionate Berkeley students, our organization hopes to keep Bhangra alive at Cal.
We are a dedicated group of individuals who gives countless hours to perfecting our art form. Our practices generally last anywhere from 2-3 hours a night, three days a week. We'll practice wherever we find space and whenever we find time, whether that be in Hearst Gym on a weekday or in RSF Garage on a Friday night. As a result, we've had the opportunities to compete in national and international Bhangra competitions, placing second at Legacy of Bhangra 2016 and placing first at Bhangra Blowout 2017–and that was just last year!
However, our team is not just about winning competitions and adding to our achievements. As 40+ college students who spends countless hours together, we have really become more like a family than a team. Whether it be at socials, practices, or even just hanging out on campus, the members of Golden Bear Competitive Bhangra are always there to support each other.
Our primary source of fundraising is competing at and winning regional and national Bhangra competitions. Most competition rubrics weigh heavily towards the quality of the team’s costumes and props. Unfortunately, our costumes and props have gone through 5 years of wear and tear and are no longer adequate to use on stage. We are hoping to replace our outfits and props so that we can continue to spread Punjabi culture and represent Cal around the US.
Currently, we do not have the funds necessary to replace our costumes and props. Therefore, with the support of this campaign, we hope to raise the $2,000 necessary to become competition-ready. This will get us 12 new costumes, 8 new saaps (a folk dance prop), and 12 new daangs (another folk dance prop)! Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
