Building a scientific citizenry - one person at a time

Science is a journey: exciting, creative, dynamic, and unpredictable. Science is a blend of logic and imagination. Scientists are people from all walks of life who enjoy the process of discovery. With training and participation in the scientific community, anyone can become a scientist.

COPUS, the Coalition for the Public Understanding of Science, is an eclectic group of individuals invested in promoting good science. With your support we hope to grow participation in the COPUS network by holding a 3-day COPUS Unconference for members of a diverse and broad community who are passionate about science.

COPUS Unconference gatherings help to build a greater scientific citizenry, one person at a time, and promote public awareness of science using a variety of innovative resources, including those associated with the UCMP Understanding Science website (http://undsci.berkeley.edu/).  With additional support, we hope to grow participation in the COPUS Unconference to include science teachers, future science teachers, graduate students, and new individuals eager to meet and discuss strategies and opportunities that will serve the community as a whole.

COPUS catalyzes connections - locally, regionally, nationally - to people, resources, and programs. We depend on friends and donors like you to broaden the network, energize individual and collective voices of many who are passionate about science!

The COPUS Unconference will:

(1) Grow a core group of passionate enthusiasts that advance the movement together while providing professional and personal support for one another. (2) Promote innovation and experimentation in how we communicate science. (3) Share what COPUS learns and creates with the larger scientific community. (4) Increase person-to-person interactions that build awareness and understanding of how science works, who scientists are, and why science matters. (5) Expand COPUS members' understanding of the public to ensure respect for the beliefs and experiences that influence their understanding of science.

Help us achieve a national, cultural shift toward increased understanding of what science is, who scientists are, what they do, and why science matters. COPUS. With your support for COPUS, we can build a scientific citizenry - one person at a time!

Exclusive Tour of Fossil Colle

Since its construction in 1914, Sather Tower has served to store the invaluable Rancho La Brea vertebrate collections made by UCMP scientists in the early 1900's. Virtually untouched since their initial storage, the tour will showcase those and other fossils stored on four floors of the Campanile.
