"Big Khalsa Little Khalsa" is a mentorship conference that connects young, driven students with college Sikh students across California. We will strive to provide assistance with the college admissions process, and provide any other support the students may need. This conference is open to all students, but is primarily directed towards Sikh students in high school. It will be a fun family event!
Background:
The Sikh Students Association (SSA) is an on-campus organization committed to providing an optimal atmosphere for personal and spiritual growth. Though we are religiously affiliated with Sikhism, our organization is all-inclusive and promotes mutual respect and cooperation. We hope to provide students with a forum for the discussion and advancement of the Sikh faith, and to educate the greater campus about Sikhi and its many followers.
This project aligns with SSA’s four main pillars, which are Seva (selfless service), Sangat (fellowship/association), Simran (prayer), and Academics. As college students, we want to volunteer our time to promote academic excellence and unity among those in our community. Parents in the Sikh community value education, but often times do not have the means to provide their children with the proper advice. As first and second generation college students, a lot of the Sikh students on the UC Berkeley campus went through the same struggles. Now, we all want to come together to create a support system for these students. We want to be able to reach out to as much of the Sikh youth as possible, and to maintain relations with the mentees so they know they always have someone to turn to.
The Event:
The 22 board members in our organization come from diverse backgrounds and majors, ranging from Civil Engineering and Computer Science to Business Administration and Integrative Biology. For our event, we plan to bring in many more qualified mentors from a variety of disciplines, including our clubs many, many general members. In the future, since SSA is an organization that exists at many different college campuses, we plan to recruit mentors from various UC’s and CSU’s as well. We will collaborate in order to create workshops and other materials that will benefit all types of students, from first generation college students to those who to those who are not fluent in English. Some examples of workshops include things like “High School Schedule Building” and “The College Admissions Process.” We want to introduce what life in college is like, and show them that higher education is a feasible option for them too!
We hope to accommodate younger children and families as well, so we will have various activities and games available for them. We will also provide campus tours and have Q&A sessions.
What We Need:
We need your help to bring BKLK to UC Berkeley! As a non-profit organization, we need help to raise funds to be able to make such a large, philanthropic event successful and effective. Through this event, we will be able to positively influence the lives of so many students, and the impact of this will be seen even years from now. Our goal is to kickstart this program successfully this year, and hopefully be able to continue it in the long-run.
Your support will make this conference a reality and will help the provide resources to make the idea of higher education as accessible to all students as possible! Please make a donation today!
