Project Update: THANK YOU!!!
From myself and everyone at UGMO, THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our crowdfund campaign!
We were able to raise $5,729 with 67 donors in a month, surpassing our original goal of $3,500!!! All of UGMO is super grateful for your support, and look forward to another excellent season next year!
Your contributions made one of the most memorable seasons is UGMO history possible. From winning Stanford Open, to flying up to the Northwest Challenge, to taking 3rd at Presidents Day, I can say personally that this season was one I will remember forever. I know my fellow Monkey's would agree. THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this possible for this season!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Here is a thousand 'Thank You's!' from the Ugly Monkey from California.
STRETCH GOAL REACHED!!! FINAL GOAL: $7,500
We are so thankful for all of the support you all have been showing this past month! You have truly blown away all of our expectations! Since reaching our initial goal, your extra donations have helped us cover the entire cost of upcoming Regionals (JUST 1 WEEK AWAY)! After taking second place at Sectionals, we'll be fighting for the opportunity to extend our season and a spot at prestigious Nationals. With all of your support this last month, we feel ready to take on the biggest and baddest teams the Southwest has to throw at us. Be sure to follow us on twitter for donor thank-you's and score updates!
Our final goal of $7,500 will allow us to help cover the costs of attending Nationals, but could also serve as a way to cover hotel costs for the season! Help us reach our new goal before our campaign ends in just one week!
STRETCH GOAL SET: $5,000
All of us here at UGMO are so thankful for all of the support you have been showing us! Your help so far has pushed us past our initial goal in only 5 days! We still have 25 days left, and we think that we still have some room to grow! So far, your donations have paid for all of our tournament registration fees for this spring season! If we hit $5,000, that will cover not only the tournament registration fees, but the hotel costs for an additional tournament!
Stay tuned for more information as this project moves forward. None of this would be possible without all of your help so far!
Who We Are
UGMO (short for Ugly Monkey), UC Berkeley Men’s Ultimate team, has been representing Cal since 1989. Since then the team has taken many forms as people come and go from Berkeley, but one thing stays the same: having a blast playing Ultimate. This year the team is looking extra fresh with a 3rd Place finish at the Presidents Day Invitational and a 1st Place finish at the Stanford Open! UGMO is looking to continue having a successful Spring, and we need your help!
But first, a little more about us. The 2017/2018 iteration of UGMO has 24 members ranging from many different walks of life. We’re made up of engineers, chemists, computer scientists (a lot of those), biologists, economists and businessmen. But more importantly, what brings us together day in and day out is our shared love for the sport of ultimate and each other. For many on the team, the experience of being on UGMO is the highlight of their time at Berkeley.
UGMO is a great community. As someone from across the country, I struggled to find a solid support group in my first semester, but joining UGMO really gave me a tight-knit community that helped me adjust to life at Cal.

Playing for Cal UGMO has been the central defining feature of my college experience. My experience at Cal UGMO for the past 4 has been relaxing, intense, challenging, and most importantly, just plain fun. I discovered a lifelong passion in ultimate frisbee with which I plan on devoting many years to. More importantly, I discovered a community and a friend group; without them, my life would be completely different.
- Rajiv Sambharya - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Graduate Student
UGMO is like a colony of bacteria: a warm and mushy community.
- Jace “Space Jace” Bruner - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Class of '21
Community is very important in the sport of Ultimate and on UGMO. In partnership with our fabulous Women’s team on campus, the Pie Queens, UGMO has been giving back to the community by coaching a Middle School Ultimate program. UGMO and the Pie Queens send players twice a week to Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley to teach the kids about our sport. Players from our program also help out at local ultimate events and are active throughout the whole ultimate community.
With your donations we will be able to make UGMO affordable so anyone and everyone can be a part of and enjoy UGMO. Below you can see a breakdown of our expenses for a typical season. Your donations will allow us to keep competing with the best teams in the country and having a blast doing it.
Your donations to this project will go towards making UGMO Ultimate affordable to all. Below, you can see a simple graphic describing some of the costs an individual and the team experience on UGMO.
