The Conscious Coffee Project is officially the fair trade representative at Cal. Fair trade is an international non-profit with members who advocate the payment of higher prices to exporters, as well as improved social and environmental standards. We are a team of UC Berkeley students with a goal to empower other students and the local community to make informed consumption choices that support economically vulnerable communites susceptible to human trafficking! We also have an app that is available via iPhone and Android called "ConsciousCoffee" which shows nearby coffee shops that have partnered with us at our Coffee Festival in 2019. It also includes pictures and information about the coffee shop and what products are considered fair-trade.
Our Mission:
“Sustainability” is a word used in the business world to describe processes throughout the chain of production ⚒ Agricultural products like coffee heavily depend on land and workers that are both also easily exploited, which can lead to harmful long term consequences on the environment and society. Sustainability is a broad term, branching beyond the environment into economic and social arenas as well. There needs to be a healthy balance between all three in order to provide the coffee community—from consumers to farmers— with a high quality product that is mindful on a local & global level
"Ethical sourcing" acts as an umbrella term for labels like Fair Trade, USDA Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and many more. Since it's represented through so many different labels and industries, it can be hard to gain a cohesive understanding of the significance of this term
Our Festival:
We have an Outreach team, App Development Team, and Media Team in order to ensure that the Coffee Festival on campus is super informative and fun for our students and peers at Cal. Partnerships with Counter Culture, Guayaki, and local roasters have made this experience possible.
