Space Technologies and Rocketry (STAR) | Our Most Ambitious Projects Yet!

STAR Rocket Logo

Space Technologies and Rocketry, also known as STAR, is Berkeley's premier competition rocketry team. With nearly a decade of experience, STAR is an entirely student run and led organization dedicated to pushing the boundaries of low-cost rockets.

FLYING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROCKETS OUR MISSION COMPETITION Compete in IREC (Intercollegiate Rocketry Engineering Competition) EDUCATION All new members build and launch a rocket their first semester OUTREACH Host events with high schools and run $10,000 scholarship OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1. 6th place in 30k in IREC 2024 2. Flew Berkeley’s only successfully recovered liquid vehicle 3. 4th in apogee in IREC 2023 4. Hold the university altitude record RECENT LAUNCHES ALULA: 2024, 6128 ft Caldera: 2024, 27326 ft Sustainer: 2024, 8973 ft Bearealis: 2023, 4075 ft CalVisitor: 2023, 10023 ft OUR IMPACT 1. 130 members with no application or requirements to join 2. New members learn to build and launch a rocket their first semester 3. Develop cost-saving aerospace technologies 4. Foster the next generation of engineers 5. Inspire K-12 students to pursue engineering

CURRENT PROJECTS LE3 -Our third liquid engine Regenerative cooling -Aluminum airframe -Launching in IREC 2026 IREC 2025 -Fiberglass rocket -Live video and telemetry -Autonomous antennas -Deployable lander TRISTAN -Atmospheric Lander -Deployed during recovery -Collect environmental data upon landing -Autonomous OUR BUDGET From propellant to bolts, rockets are not cheap! Roughly half our budget comes form donors like you! If we don’t reach out goal, we will cut out non-critical technical projects. Intro Project: funds all new members building and launch high power rockets, at no cost to them Operations: funds tool and equipment purchases, transportation, and team-wide supplies Financial Aid Fund: pays launch costs for members who could afford to attend otherwise THANK YOU!This budget provides a rough estimate only and actual expenditures may vary.

Space Technologies and Rocketry is UC Berkeley's premier competition high-power rocketry team. Over the past 8 years, we have successfully completed 13 launches, with 4 taking place in the last year! With the successful launch of our first bi-propellant liquid vehicle ALULA, we are starting development on our third liquid engine (LE3). Our vehicles are entirely student-designed, manufactured, and tested, from our custom flight computer to our life support payload KELSE-Y. Committed to having no barriers to entry, STAR has no requirements or applications for members, and everyone who joins takes part in a comprehensive onboarding program. STAR also boasts the longest competition history on campus having previously launched at NASA Student Launch, and now participating in the ESRA Spaceport America Cup.

STAR is developing its second liquid rocket: LE3. A regeneratively cooled engine with control valves, it's our most ambitious project yet! We plan to launch LE3's solid motor demonstrator at the 2025 Spaceport America Cup while developing the liquid engine in parallel to be launched in Fall 2025. Funding will be divided between the two parallel projects' development and insurance costs.

Our hundred-plus members work tirelessly to hone their engineering skills by launching rockets, but they cannot reach their full potential without proper funding. These projects additionally push the boundaries of collegiate rocketry and advance the field of low-cost rockets by inventing and testing new technologies. Using our accomplishments and the skills we learn, we lead outreach events with Bay Area pre-college students, inspiring them to pursue engineering.
