Berkeley Scientific Journal (BSJ) is the premier undergraduate research journal of the University of California, Berkeley. Every semester, our undergraduate staff publishes independent research done by undergraduates at UC Berkeley, interviews with faculty members, and features articles on current issues in science. All research papers and features articles are reviewed by faculty members. The initial purpose of the journal was to provide an official forum in which Berkeley undergraduates could publish their independent research.

But since its inception in 1996, the purpose of the journal has expanded to give the Berkeley scientific community a better understanding of how events here at Berkeley impact global concerns. The focus of the journal is broad, spanning scientific disciplines ranging from ecology to engineering, and from astronomy to biochemistry. By providing campus libraries and students copies of our journal every semester and hosting on-campus events with leaders in the scientific community to speak about their research, we work to promote scientific literacy to give the Berkeley community a better understanding of how events in the scientific world can affect us and the world around us.

A new issue of BSJ is published twice a year on eScholarship, in print, and on our website! Our intended audience includes, but is not limited to, UC Berkeley students, faculty, and the surrounding community. We are also continuing our mid-semester magazine, The Hypothesis, that will feature more short-form blog content for our readers!

This year, with your donations, the dream of our editorial team is to:

1) Secure enough funding to publish our issues in print. Each BSJ issue represents the dedication and talent of our students who produce interesting and high-quality work.

2) Increase BSJ readership as much as possible both inside and outside the Berkeley community

3) Expand the professionalism of our journal by applying for awards and outreach events

To break it down further, $1200 will go mainly towards printing and shipping costs, as well as guest speaking events and other outreach events to educate the community about science through journalism. If we do not meet this goal, we will use the money towards printing as many copies as we can to effectively communicate science. Scientific research affects everyone's day-to-day lives and it's critical that we provide the community with resources and knowledge to learn more about the world around us.
