Support Berkeley Scientific Journal Printing! FA’26
Description
Berkeley Scientific Journal
The Berkeley Scientific Journal (BSJ) is UC Berkeley’s premier undergraduate scientific research journal, run entirely by Berkeley students. Our editorial team works each semester to publish independent research conducted by undergraduates, interview faculty members, and feature articles on current issues across the scientific community. We showcase high-quality undergraduate work while giving students the opportunity to share their research with a broader audience.
Since its founding in 1996, BSJ has grown into working to make science more accessible to the Berkeley community and encourage greater scientific literacy. Our coverage spans disciplines from ecology and engineering to astronomy, chemistry, and biochemistry. We publish a full journal issue twice a year through eScholarship, in print, and on our website, while also continuing The Hypothesis, our mid-semester magazine featuring shorter-form science writing. We also distribute copies of our publications across campus and organize events and talks that connect students with researchers and members of the scientific community.

Distributing our journal across campus!
How Your Support Helps
Your contributions will primarily support the production and distribution of our publications toward the end of each semester, when our issues are finalized and ready for print. Funds will be used for:
- Printing and distribution - producing physical copies of BSJ and The Hypothesis so the community can access our work
- Educational events - supporting events that help connect the Berkeley community with science and research
- Expanding outreach - increasing the number of readers within and outside of UC Berkeley who can access our journal
- Professional development - increasing efforts to develop BSJ as a professional undergraduate publication
If we surpass our fundraising goal, additional funds will allow us to print more copies of our publications, expand our outreach and educational programming, and increase the accessibility of BSJ to readers both on and beyond campus. If we do not reach our goal, we will prioritize the funds we receive toward printing and distributing as many copies as possible. Regardless of the amount raised, our priority will remain making undergraduate research and accessible science writing available to our community.

Why support BSJ?
Undergraduate researchers at Berkeley are conducting exciting work across an enormous range of scientific disciplines, but research has little impact if people cannot access or understand it. BSJ helps bridge that gap by giving students a platform to communicate their work while providing the broader community with approachable, engaging scientific content.
Your support helps us keep our publications accessible to students and readers who may not otherwise encounter undergraduate research. It also allows our student staff to continue developing their skills in scientific writing, editing, journalism, and communication. With recent reductions in student media funding, community support is especially important in helping BSJ maintain the publication and outreach opportunities that have made the journal a longstanding part of Berkeley's scientific community.
