Support Haas Rugby

The Big Problem:

Rugby is a noble sport that carries high values of team spirit, respect, passion, integrity, discipline and solidarity. Rugby, more than any other sport, is a sport that embodies all of Haas’ defining principles, and specially “beyond yourself”, or “Ultra te ipsum” in Latin, which is now part of our logo.

Unfortunately, many reasons make it really hard for the club to recruit players, and subsequently present a team to the major MBA rugby tournaments. First of all, among the world top business schools, Haas has probably the smallest intake, with a class of 240 students approximately, mechanically reducing the number of prospective players. Second, in order to attract the maximum of people (and beginners), the club has a no fee policy, preventing it from receiving a steady cash flow every year. This policy is a result of the club’s confidence in converting most of the people trying rugby for the first time. Finally, the club suffers from its lack of momentum: the club has been dormant in 2012/2013 and the current club management has had to start from scratch, incurring high costs such as the purchase of a brand new playing kit or the registration with USA rugby.

What Your Support Will Do:

We want to strengthen the Haas Rugby club and make it live and grow throughout the years. We want to have a team represent Haas is worldwide MBA events, which will be essential in building the school’s brand name and in building ties with students from the other top business schools in the world.

This initiative has a two-level target:

First of all, ensuring the rugby club will continue every year. For doing this, the rugby club must own a rugby kit and rugby balls. At the beginning of the year, only 4 jerseys, a few shorts and 1 ball are left from the past years. The current club management had to buy a new kit, making this a high initial investment for all the club members. The kit issue is solved now, but this is temporary, as we know a kit has a limited lifetime, and as other expenses will arise (shorts, balls …). The goal behind this initiative is then to create an “emergency fund”, that the club will be able to use on special circumstances, without having to make current students bear the whole cost.

The second target is to have the rugby club send a team to major tournaments, such as the MBA rugby world cup in Duke, the MBA division of the Las Vegas 7evens tournament or the Stanford tournament. The students/players themselves will pay most of the expenses required to be in those tournaments. However, participating in all of them (and there is only 3) puts a financial strain on the players. The second goal of this initiative is then to subsidize part of the tournament fees, which will allow more players to participate.

We believe $2,500 is a figure that would serve both targets ($1,500 as an emergency fund, $1,000 as tournament fees) but this target will not be reached without your valuable support.

And One More Thing, Please Share This Message!

This year, the club management has put a tremendous effort in reliving the club and giving it great momentum. For instance, the club participated in the Stanford tournament in November and put his hands on the runners up trophy. Today, the club needs your help for making another step forward. If there is a former rugby teammate or friend or family member you think could help us out, please share this project with them. The Haas Rugby Club is grateful for the generous support of donors committed to perpetuate the Rugby tradition at Haas.

Thanks for your support!

Converted try

That guy that just scored a try is such a bad player he nearly didn’t make it. Worse still, he scored so far away from the posts that he couldn’t get the conversion. You get the ball and show him how it’s done. Each donor at this level will receive the official club tie.
